Victorian Goldfields
The Victorian Goldfields are an historically fascinating region in Central Victoria about 100 km west/n-w of Melbourne. They were transformed from a quiet farming district by the huge gold discoveries in 1851 near Ballarat. Today the area is rich in fine Victorian architecture, many beautiful parks and gardens as well as a wealth of galleries, cafes, museums and boutique-style accommodation. The major cities of Ballarat and Bendigo are surrounded by a number of smaller charming towns such as Castlemaine, Clunes, Creswick, Maryborough and Maldon.
